History in the heart of Brentwood

Hundreds of people pass by the ruins in the centre of Brentwood but do they know their true meaning?

Brentwood began as a clearing made in the woods by burning trees (hence 'burnt wood' which became Brentwood) to provide a stop-off point about one day's journing from the Thames for pilgrims en route from East Anglia to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury. The first church building dedicated to St Thomas in Brentwood was a chapel built around 1221 to serve these pilgrims. The ruins of the original chapel are still to be seen in the High Street.

Beresfords Welcome to 2010

Welcome to the first post of 2010

I am delighted to announce that due to the continued support of our clients, 2009 proved to be highly rewarding for all our divisions with the number of sales, properties let and mortgage lending all up significantly. For example, comparing monthly totals against the same period in 2008, we saw sales up by 84%, number of properties let up by 36% and mortgage lending up by 46%.

Beresfords’ investment to marketing has certainly helped to generate thousands of extra enquiries, which could not have been achieved without that major commitment. Beresfords TV is going from strength to strength with more and more properties being added. Visit www.beresfords.tv to see the latest developments.

Last year ended on a high for us with our service being recognised at the highest level having been rewarded with four leading industry awards including, Best Estate Agency in Essex and Best UK Estate Agency Marketing at the Daily Mail UK Property Awards and Best New Homes Agent at The Sunday Times Estate Agency of the Year Awards.

With increased buyer activity and the number of properties being sold and let across Essex on the rise, we are currently witnessing a far greater need for further properties to come to the market.

Those who do decide to sell their property are being pleasantly surprised by the speed at which they are selling and the price levels being achieved.

As we begin a New Year and confidence continues to return to the market place I am optimistic that the property market will continue to show further signs of improvement.

Beresfords sponsor leading Basketball Team

Beresfords are proud to announce the sponsorship of Brentwood Fire under 10’s Basketball Team. This exciting young team participate in central venue tournaments and leagues where approximately 6-8 clubs are represented.

The under 10’s are part of Champions Academy UK (CAUK) who are based in Brentwood. CAUK started life as Living in Victory in 1989 with just five children from a local church youth group playing basketball in the Brentwood Centre. It has grown today to become on the of the biggest and best basketball community programmes in the country. Over 12000 children receive weekly coaching across three boroughs in Essex either through delivery into local Primary Schools or participation in the extensive sessions offered at the Academies home at Shenfield Sports Centre. The Academy works hard to develop the next generation of sports coach and leaders with the right positive attitude.

Beresfords would like to wish the whole team the best of luck for all your future games.

Norsey Wood, Billericay

Only a short distance from Billericay’s thriving High Street is the 165 acre expanse of Norsey Wood.

The wood is associated with an astonishing 4,000 years of history. It holds an important collection of archaeological features unique to the region, including occupation areas and burial sites dating from prehistoric and Roman periods.

From more recent history, a network of trenches from the two world wars stretches along the eastern part of the wood. During World War II, the wood was used for Army manoeuvres and ammunition storage.

Norsey Wood's topography also sets it apart in Essex. Its clay valleys and gravelly, sandy hilltops are not only rare and interesting, but also botanically significant. This has led to the site's designation as a local nature reserve by the Nature Conservancy Council.

The area is particularly famous for its bluebells, which cover the woodland floor between April and May. The brightly coloured domes create a beautiful spectacle – especially valued as this protected species does not easily colonise new woodlands. Visitors can either join one of the guided wildflower walks or explore alone to their hearts' content.

The area is much loved and many of the local people take an active interest in preserving its natural beauty. The Norsey Wood Society receives community input, while a volunteer work party meets every Thursday to undertake conservation work.

Beresfords Support Macmillan Cancer Trust

Beresfords are proud to support local and national charities and one such organisation is Macmillan Cancer Support. One vendor was particularly happy with the services of our Chelmsford office that they wanted to give the team a monetary gift to thank them for all their hard work in negotiating the sale of their property. As you would expect the team were very grateful for the offer but felt the money should be used to help such a worthwhile charity, namely Macmillan Cancer Trust. With the vendors permission the money was donated to the Chelmsford arm of Macmillan Nurses.

For many people affected by cancer, Macmillan nurses are a valued and trusted source of expert information, advice and support - free of charge. There are over 3000 Macmillan nurses across the UK, working both in hospitals and in the community. For further information about the charity visit
